Rational pharmacotherapy is whenever possible based on comparative randomized clinical trials. Actual threats are the tyranny of marginal effects combined with high costs, evaluation of correct parameters of efficacy and the distinction between novel drugs representing a real advantage or drugs that are just the results of the trivial development of well known substances.
Just as important as the inventions of new drugs are the implementation of rational pharmacotherapy to society. What have the European countries achieved with regard to independent drug information? How can we balance the need for industrial ingenuity with social considerations? How can we educate the population towards a rational approach to drug therapy?
By gathering politicians, drug administrators, clincial pharmacologists, the pharmaceutical industry and the press, the aim is to give a survey of the European market from the perspective of rational pharmacotherapy and hopefully make progress by reaching a mutual understanding of rational pharmacotherapy that satisfies the majority.
